Today in My World

Today was a great day. It started out with me being quite a bundle of nerves. I had to make several phone calls to the family of a child abuse case in order to meet with them. This was nerve racking because this is my very first case. Although I only got in touch with two of the family members, they both were extremely nice and excused my nervousness. After, my morning phone calls I had to head to school in order to begin my first class of the semester. After that class, I was mildly annoyed due to the fact that I have to give a lengthy presentation and I only have week in which to do it. It’s not a difficult task but it is time consuming. So after those two challenges everything is looking up and is going to be a good semester.

Musical artist Clay Aiken

He has one of the most amazing voices that I have ever heard. He hasn’t yet gotten the recognition that he deserves. I believe this is in part due to the fact that he got his start on “American Idol”. He was the runner-up on season two. Since he wasn’t the winner some people didn’t have interest in him. In my opinion he can sing anything better than anyone else. And his Christmas album sounds heavenly. He recently signed a new record deal with “Decca” records so I’m hoping that this will finally get him the respect and appreciation that he so deserves. In addition to his amazing voice he is a Unicef ambassador and co-founded the “National Inclusion Program” with Diane Bubel. It is a foundation dedicated to inclusion, so that all children have the chance to interact with their peers no matter what their disability may be.

Old dog bones-give them a rest!

Dogs are the most faithful companions mankind has ever known.  Their love is unconditional and they bring joy into our lives.  Many people go to bed at night with their canine companions taking up a large portion of the bed, and this is perfectly acceptable to all parties involved.  However, as dogs get older, the leap onto the bed gets more difficult.  Some people get small steps for the dog to climb up to get on the bed.  Other people spring for an over-sized orthopedic dog bed for their furry four-legged friend.  Orthopedic dog beds can offer support and comfort for an aging dog.  They still have the luxury of sleeping on a bed, but they don’t have to jump, and they don’t have to share it with anyone.

Fly me to the Moon

My favorite movie is Moon. From start to finish I was just absolutely absorbed in this science fiction story. It is honestly the only movie out there that does not result in me checking my watch halfway through. To be honest, it was the quietest I had ever heard a cinema audience to be. The key to this film’s success is the excellent casting of the main character and the gripping storyline. I just love the fact that, as hard as you try, you genuinely don’t see the plot twists coming. So much attention has been made to little details to add a subtle tinge of humor. You can’t help but grin when the main character wakes up in the space station to an alarm with the song ‘I am the one and only’! I can’t recommend it enough. I was so surprised to find this little gem of a film.

Six Strings of Awesome

I am a guitarist, and as a guitarist I constantly strive to achieve greater playing ability as I hear the plethora of amazing guitarists touring stages all across the world. I began playing classical guitar at age nine and continued to play for the next ten years. My talent grew along with my repertoire, and the word “prodigy” was thrown around often. Later in my guitar playing career I expanded my playing style to include electric and acoustic guitar. Many people don’t understand the difference between acoustic and classical guitar so I’ll explain: a classical guitar uses nylon strings for the three highest pitched strings (G, B, and e) and the width of the neck is 2 inches as opposed to an acoustic guitar which features entirely steel strings and a neck width of 1 and 7/8ths inches. Now, as a songwriter and guitarist, I’ve honed in my skills largely on the acoustic guitar and try my best to emulate my biggest guitar hero Michael Hedges.

Green Bay Packers – legacy continues

In 1919, the Green Bay Packers were founded by Earl “Curly” Lambeau. Today, the team plays at Lambeau field, a historic stadium which seats today 73,000. The Green Bay Packers won the first two Super Bowls ever (in 1966 and 1967), as well as a more recent one in 1995. Today, the Green Bay Packers play in the National Football Conference (NFC) North division, along with the Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings. The team is coached by Mike McCarthy, and has Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback. On defense, they are lead by linebackers A.J. Hawk and Aaron Kampman, and will open the 2009 at home against the Chicago Bears. The game which will be most anticipated will be on October 5th, when the Packers will travel to Minnesota to face their ex-quarterback, future hall of famer Brett Favre. Favre and the Vikings will travel to Green Bay on November 1st, which will be one of the most watched games of the year.

Dogs show gratitude

Under the lens of the pets, the animal which is considered to be the friend of mankind is dog.  Dogs are treated as a play friend for kids. They normally have a good relationship and admiration towards dogs. There are several breeds of dogs found in the animal kingdom. These include the exotic and indigenous breeds. Some are exceptionally for home breeding and some are used for trapping or tracing culprits. As dogs have the best smelling capacity, it finds a good arena in the police department for tracing thieves. These types of skilled dogs are called as the sniffer. Normally, kids take the job of maintaining the health of dogs by giving bath or wounding the dog collars for its safety. Dogs do the work of security personnel during night hours. There are many types of orthopedic dog beds used for disabled or aging dogs as a support and comfort.

Dinnertime for a Family of Six

Last night, I prepared about three pounds of chicken breasts, a bag of frozen broccoli florets, and ten minute rice. After cutting into chunks, cooking and steaming the chicken; I added the broccoli along with some salt, pepper, and garlic salt. Next, I added two cups of rice to soak up some of the liquid on the bottom. I then cut and fried garlic and onions, sautéed them separately and then added them to the pan with everything else in it. I let it sit for a little on low to simmer and absorb the entire flavor. About twenty minutes later it was ready to serve. My family loved it and I still have some leftovers for tonight!

Stay at Home Mom

As a stay at home mom to a busy toddler, my day is often a blur of two word sentences, diaper changes, nursing marathons, and the endless array of books, puzzles, and other playtime favorites. Once in awhile, I might even get a break if my toddler decides to nap. Here is an abbreviated version of my typical day: wake up, nurse toddler, change a diaper. Make coffee, breakfast; clean anything that didn’t get cleaned the night before. Feed toddler, husband and self while skimming my bookmarked sites. Clean up breakfast, toddler, and self before husband leaves for work. Play with toddler (current playtime favorites are kitchen, books, golf, and cat). Intercept toddler from hitting the cat. Nurse, give toddler a snack, sneaks a peek at email. Nurse toddler to sleep and do the slow creep off the bed, hoping for some downtime. During said downtime, start laundry, do normal household tasks (plan dinner, pay bills, vacuum, etc.), sneak another peek at favorite sites. After toddler wakes up, continue ad nausea, adding dinner, other fun activities, more cleaning/diapers/kissing booboos/saving cat/etc. It’s all worth it though! I’d rather live this hectic life than drop my baby off with someone and never know how they were spending their day.

“Touch ‘em all, Joe”

My love affair with the Toronto Blue Jays started right at the very end of that team’s glory years. I can remember a visit with my parents to a family friend, and hiding in the basement with the rest of the kids, huddled up in front of the screen, keg refrigerator next to me. Game 6 between Toronto and Philadelphia was going down to the wire, with closer Mitch “Wild Thing” Williams on the mound for the Phillies. When the free-swinging Carter stepped to the plate with 2 outs, I feared a strike out. Instead, he hit one deep to left, and inspired the iconic call from late Jays announcer Tom Cheek: “Touch ‘em all, Joe! You’ll never hit a bigger home run in your life!” Since then, as a Jays fan, there has been little to cheer about. Since 1993, when I was 11, I haven’t celebrated a postseason appearance. There have been a few individual accolades in that time (Cy Young awards for Pat Hentgen, a roided-up Roger Clemens, and the eminently likeable Roy Halladay) but rather little else. Perhaps the losing makes the team even more lovable. In this time I’ve made but one pilgrimage to SkyDome, being half a continent away. But I should return sometime soon.
